COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Supporting Children with Separation Anxiety in Childcare course. This program is designed for early childhood educators and childcare professionals who support children experiencing difficulty separating from their parents or carers.

Separation anxiety is a natural part of early development, yet for some children it can become a significant barrier to their social, emotional, and cognitive growth. This course begins by defining separation anxiety within the early years, exploring the difference between typical developmental behaviour and persistent challenges, and outlining key stages of attachment from birth through to five years of age.

Understanding what causes separation anxiety is essential to responding appropriately. This section explores contributing factors such as a child’s temperament, family environment, and the impact of significant changes or trauma. The child’s response to separation is shaped by both biological and environmental influences, and identifying these helps educators tailor their support strategies.

Recognising the signs of separation anxiety is the first step in intervention. This section covers common behavioural, emotional, and physical symptoms—ranging from crying and clinging to sleep disturbances and withdrawal—helping educators to respond with sensitivity and awareness.

Attachment theory provides the foundation for effective support. This section introduces Bowlby’s model of attachment, explains the importance of a secure base in the childcare environment, and discusses how educators can build strong, trusting relationships to support emotional security.

A trauma-informed approach is critical in childcare settings. This section explores the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) on anxiety, strategies to create a psychologically safe environment, and how to prevent retraumatisation during drop-offs, transitions, and care routines.

Family involvement is essential to supporting children with separation anxiety. This section highlights the importance of working closely with families to create consistent routines, honour cultural beliefs around separation, and implement shared strategies through individualised transition plans.

The physical environment also influences emotional regulation. This section offers guidance on creating soothing spaces within classrooms, using visual routines to reduce uncertainty, and supporting children with familiar objects from home to ease the transition.

Strong educator-child relationships are a protective factor. This section focuses on key bonding techniques, such as assigning a consistent primary educator, engaging in trust-building activities, and being responsive to the emotional needs of each child throughout the day.

Arrival and departure routines play a pivotal role in shaping a child's sense of security. This section introduces simple rituals that support children during goodbyes, highlights the importance of brief, confident departures, and provides strategies for smooth parent-to-educator handovers.

Soothing strategies help children manage their feelings in the moment. This section explores techniques such as breathing exercises, sensory tools, and mindfulness strategies that are developmentally appropriate and easily implemented within childcare settings.

Play is one of the most effective tools for emotional expression. This section outlines play-based interventions such as role-playing separation scenarios, therapeutic storytelling, and using picture books and social stories to normalise and prepare for transitions.

Peers can also offer powerful support. This section discusses how to foster a sense of belonging through buddy systems, group engagement, and peer modelling of calm, regulated behaviour—particularly helpful for children who are new to the childcare setting.

Communication is key to emotional validation. This section focuses on the use of language to support children through anxiety, including affirming emotional cues and using non-verbal strategies like eye contact and posture to show empathy and understanding.

Gradual separation plans support children at their own pace. This section explains how to phase in attendance, gradually increase independence from carers, and recognise and celebrate progress to build children’s confidence and resilience.

There are times when more support is needed. This section helps educators identify red flags for clinical anxiety, outlines the process of collaborating with mental health professionals, and explains how to document observations and concerns appropriately.

Educators must be prepared for high-stress situations. This section outlines how to recognise escalating anxiety, implement emergency management strategies, and establish safety plans that prioritise the emotional and physical wellbeing of all children.

Cultural and individual differences must always be respected. This section encourages educators to adapt their approaches to meet the unique needs of each child and family, with a focus on cultural sensitivity and inclusive care practices.

Tracking progress ensures strategies remain effective. This section introduces tools for observing and recording behaviour changes, establishing feedback loops with families, and adjusting support strategies to meet the evolving needs of children as they grow.

By the end of this course, you will be equipped with practical, compassionate, and evidence-based strategies to support children with separation anxiety—ensuring every child feels safe, understood, and confident in their early learning environment.

Each section is complemented with examples to illustrate the concepts and techniques discussed.

Great to stop Doggie boredom/barking
Size: Extra Small, Style: Bristle Bone
For tiny dogs, these are great ways to entertain the pups and get them to clean their own teeth; I have had one for 5 years and the dogs never were able to harm the white parts. I gave it to a pup that was homeless and I didn't have the heart to take it back later - It is quiet as a mouse and fits perfectly in tiny dog mouths. You do have to have their raw hide inserts but they're easy to find, not expensive, and again is great for boredom time for the dogs.

Favorite chew toy
Size: Medium, Style: Bristle Bone
Pros: this is our dog’s favorite toy. She loves to eat but isn’t much for chewing. At 2 years old, her teeth were already looking pretty bad because she swallows everything whole. That makes most chew toys dangerous. This is the first toy that she chews aggressively. At first we had to give it to her in short spurts because her gums bled. That’s stopped, her teeth and gums look healthier, and she carries it around with or without the inserts. She loves it. The con: the bristles come apart after aggressive chewing. She swallowed some and I caught the other side coming off. So whenever I see this on sale, I buy several new ones. I don’t try to make it last and I check it often for damage.

Dog treat and chew bine
Size: Medium, Style: Bouncy Bone
This was an ok purchase for my little dog. After eating the treats. She definitely liked this treat. She is 2 years old and loves her treats. Disappointed, in that it does not last as long as they said it would.

Boxer Approved!
Size: Small, Style: Bristle Bone
One of my boxer girls (the fawn one in the video, 6 yrs old) hardly ever chews on things, my other boxer girl (the sealed brindle, 11 mos old) chews constantly and we're buying new nylabone chew toys 1-2 times a month for her. I wanted something to encourage my older girl to chew more for dental health and serotonin secretion, I know the benefits of chewing far outweigh the risks for dogs so I've been trying all kinds of things but hooves, ears and real bones get stinky and the girls stop caring for them after a few chew sessions, and my fawn baby only sometimes has interest in chew toys of any kind. When I found this with the different textures, materials (hard plastic, nylon bristles, rubber type discs, & jerky treat) I jumped for one, and it's a HUGE HIT! She loves it, my 11 mo old loves it, and I definitely need backups because they're going to love this one to death in a couple weeks- I'm so happy about that!! Between this and the new snuffle mat we bought at the same time, which both my girls go crazy for, I've finally found enrichment toys that boost my girls health both mentally and physically and they can BOTH get so much joy from them!!! Big wins for this dog momma, I'm ecstatic and grateful we've hit the spot for our babies!! Would recommend and will buy again 10/10, seems durable after at least 5 chew sessions giving the girls turns of 10-15 min each, the video shows the wear from those sessions and it's not too rough yet. Their breath smells better after each session, and my older girl who hardly ever chews sometimes gets bloody gums when she does chew, that's gone away now that she's chewing this toy regularly for about 2 weeks, twice a week (working our way up slowly to 3-4 times weekly). As you can see in the video, they don't even need the jerky treat anymore, they've fallen in love with the toy so much! But it helps encourage them to get their mouth working in different ways around the whole bone and not just one part, so I'll keep getting the treats for better overall coverage of the whole mouth getting cleaned. The size is a little small for my big boxer girls but not too small, they won't swallow any parts but they are mindful chewers, not too heavy-more like medium chewers, and they actually always choose the smaller toys over the big ones so it's perfect to pique their interest! Easy to take apart and clean, put in the treats and hand over to the dogs, they don't unscrew the end of the bone even if it gets a little loose during a chew sesh. We wash it with water after each use and set it out to dry, never gets stinky so far. Good value and great use for the money!
