Description:
Pandanus baptistii Variegated is a striking tropical plant known for its bold, architectural form and eye-catching variegated foliage. The long, arching leaves feature creamy-yellow stripes along their margins, creating dramatic texture and colour contrast in garden beds or containers. Its compact size and upright growth make it perfect for feature planting in coastal, tropical, and subtropical landscapes.
Flowers:
Infrequent in cultivation. When mature, it may produce small, fragrant flowers followed by decorative fruit, but this is rare in garden settings.
Foliage:
Long, sword-shaped leaves with bright green centres and bold creamy-yellow variegation. Leaves grow in spirals around the trunk, giving the plant a sculptural, tropical appearance.
Fruit:
Rarely seen in cultivation; occasionally forms rounded, pineapple-like fruit clusters in tropical climates.
Form & Size:
Upright, clumping plant reaching approximately 1.5–2m high and 1–1.5m wide in garden settings. Can be maintained smaller in containers.
Growing Conditions:
- Position: Prefers full sun to part shade.
- Soil: Grows best in sandy, well-drained soil with organic matter.
- Climate: Ideal for tropical and subtropical regions; tolerates coastal exposure and light frost once established.

Uses:
- Perfect for tropical gardens, feature planting, and poolside landscapes.
- Excellent in large pots or containers for patios and courtyards.
- Ideal for coastal gardens due to its salt tolerance.
Maintenance:
- Very low-maintenance.
- Remove dead or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy.
- Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage lush growth.
Notes:
- Sharp leaf edges—position away from walkways or use with care in high-traffic areas.
- Can form aerial roots as it matures, adding to its architectural appeal.
- Tolerates wind and salt, making it excellent for exposed coastal sites.
