The Dornier DO.X was the most powerful flying boat when it was produced by The Dornier Co in 1929. The luxurious passenger accomodation approached the standard of Transatlantic Liners.
The first transatlantic test flight took off from Friedrichshafen in November 1930 to New York. At Lisbon fire broke out and the flight was delayed for six weeks. It was not until August 1931 that the flight reached New York. Plans were scrapped for a regular service between Berlin and New York.
Eventually the DO. X was turned over to Deutsche Lufthansa after the financially strapped Dornier Co. could no longer operate it. No further commercial flights took place.
